What a great way to spend the afternoon - a private foraging tour at Mamakan's bush sanctuary.I loved how you thought of every detail from the table setting, to the menu to what we would enjoy foraging.The biggest takeaway I got was how we're all connected to mother earth and can through a little bit of knowledge appreciate how it can feed us.Favourite plants:Kauri because of the story behind the male and female conesHarekeke for it's sweetnessAnd Kawakawa, Manuka and Kanuka as I already knew about them but their diversity and commonality are easily used in everyday life.
The experience was completely unique and informative. The preparation and attention to detail was beautiful and I came away with a renewed appreciation for our native bush.

I loved the course. I personally found it very useful to understand Mamakan's background (which was fascinating) to give context to her knowledge and experience and how she came to host this course.I really enjoyed the mix of science, history (eg the story about Maori and Karaka) and experiential art. I came away with a much better understanding of NZ native plants and feel far more confident to eat them and create tonics etc with them. I am considering making my own tonics and cooking with them.The plants I enjoyed the most were:- Horopito - the spice was amazing and I can see myself using this- Karaka - typically known as poisonous so interesting to see it edible- Kauri - the drink was awesome! Incredible to taste such an iconic NZ native- Hangehange - I eat so many salad greens and its amazing I could switch to something foraged if I find it locally- Mamaku - due to the survival story!I have recommended the walk to lots of people already!
