Of Armenian descent, Miss Agnes Joaquim was an early Singaporean pioneer and inventor. Today, she is recognized as the first woman in the world to create a hybrid orchid through deliberate hybridisation.
This contemporary and original fine art photography collection is a tribute to the innovative and creative side to Agnes, who as a Victorian single lady fearless and determined pursued her passion for botanicals with award-winning results.
Since 1893 when the orchid was first described by the director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens, there has been a new classification genus of the species, from Vanda to Papilionanthe. “Papillon” means “Butterfly” in French, beautiful, but fragile. "Teeterneeg" is the word for butterfly in Armenian.
Shortly after Agnes’ creation won the 1st prize for the rarest orchid and long before it was chosen as the national flower of Singapore, she succumbed to illness and died much too young, only 45 years old.
Her spirit of botanic inventiveness is everlasting.
Yin/Yang Balance
Together, a trinity of Yin elements, (water, flow and flower) creates a sense of balance, calmness and healing in contrast to a world overwhelmed by Yang - technology, stress and competition.
